Caldicot Community Fridge was set up in January 2021 by Wye Gymnastics and Galaxy Cheerleading during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the time, our staff could see firsthand that many of our members and their families were struggling. Job losses, reduced incomes, and growing uncertainty meant that some families were finding it difficult to put food on the table. In response to this need, the idea of the Community Fridge was born — a simple but powerful way to support those who needed a little help.
As the project grew, we began to realise just how much perfectly good food was being thrown away every single day by supermarkets and suppliers. That realisation changed our mission.
What started as a response to a global crisis became something much bigger.
Our focus expanded beyond supporting individuals to also protecting our planet — reducing food waste and preventing edible food from ending up in landfill.
Today, Caldicot Community Fridge collects surplus food daily from three supermarkets, one bakery, and one wholesaler, redistributing it back into the community where it can make a real difference.
As of December 2025, we are proud to have saved over 120,000 tonnes of food from going to waste.
We believe that no good food should be thrown away and no one should go without — and with the support of our community, we continue to work toward a more sustainable, caring future for everyone.
